5 Ways to Use Castor Oil: Hair + Body

I know first hand what it’s like to stare at your shelf full of products and wonder how you’re going to use all 5 face washes, 6 shampoos, 4 toners, and 9 acne treatments.

I’ve personally accepted my title as a ‘product junkie,’ and plan to begin the long and tiresome journey towards recovery. In the meantime, I’ve started investing in staple products (like Apple Cider Vinegar) that have multiple beauty and health purposes!

If you have yet to be introduced to Castor Oil, allow me five minutes to blow your mind with five unique ways to incorporate this popular carrier oil into your routine!

(Make sure to check out the accompanying YouTube Video to see these uses in action)

5 Unique Ways to Use Castor Oil: Hair, Skin, and Body

Eyelashes

Using Castor Oil for my eyelashes has been the ultimate game changer. Not only have I been able to strengthen my lashes, but I can almost promise you that they’ve grown! Although many critics claim eyelash growth isn’t as possible as people suggest, doing whatever you can to prevent breakage is always a must.

My Routine: Every other day I like to take this Elf eyelash brush and dip it into my NOW Foods Castor Oil, wiping off the excess oil before applying to my lash line. Being VERY careful, I comb through my lashes and gently wipe off excess oil that may get into my eyes.

Edges / Thinning Hairline

We aren’t going to talk about those ‘#hairgoals’ models with perfectly slicked back edges that look impossibly ‘effortless.’ That’s a touchy subject for my stubborn coils…

Many of you, including myself, may struggle with sparse edges that seem to disappear one day and come back another refusing to work with gel or wax. This issue could occur for a multitude of reasons and shouldn’t be taken lightly. If your hair is just prone to breakage in certain areas, Castor Oil is an incredible addition to any routine.

My Routine: During the last couple days of my protective style (to make sure I don’t make my roots ‘oily’ early on), I like to apply a generous amount of castor oil around my hairline. During the growth process, I typically stay away from gels and wax around the thinning hair to give my spots a chance to grow back.

Split Ends

Although I’m a firm believer in cutting off dead hair and split ends, using Castor Oil to nourish your ends when you feel as though they’re dry or neglected can work wonders. I noticed, after nearing my second-year post ‘big chop,’ that my ends are what need the most attention as opposed to my differing curl patterns. After caring for my ends with heavy oils like Olive, Castor, and Avocado Oil, I noticed a HUGE difference in its overall health.

My Routine: Nearly every day (or when I remember), I take a small amount of castor oil and apply to my ends, nape of my neck, and on thinning spots around my scalp (as mentioned in #2).

Nail Cuticles

After reading about this use online my body mourned the loss of the money spent on cuticle oil at beauty supply stores in the past. To keep it short, castor oil has kept your girl all kinds of nourished whether it be nail cuticles and skin, in general.

My Routine: Taking a q-tip or my pinky finger, I take a generous amount of Castor Oil and rub into my nail cuticles for a few seconds. Massaging the oil in and leaving overnight when needed always does the trick for cracked or dry cuticles!

Natural Massage Oil (Joints + Muscles)

If you have sore muscles or aching joints, Castor Oil has been found to be an incredible resource and calming remedy. I’ve used this oil for aching muscles when I’m not able to take a bath (I’m not a bath person as it is), and soon found myself buying a $1 Target travel bottle to create my own massage oil concoction for future uses.

My Routine: I like to add 3-5 drops of an essential oil of my choice (usually Peppermint or Tea Tree) to a small travel bottle of Castor Oil. When I’m ready to use the oil for sore muscles or as a soothing ‘stressful day’ pampering session, I like to warm up the oil by placing in a bowl of hot water for a few minutes before applying where needed.

I’m sure there are plenty of other uses you all can find for this popular carrier oil. I always advise investing in products you love and know can you give the most bang for your buck. Castor Oil is one of many, and definitely a ‘go-to’ in my collection.
