The Best Oils for Strong, Natural, and Healthy Hair
Messing with my curls is starting to become the easiest way to pass the time when I’m searching for something to do. Experimenting with twist and braid-outs while testing different gels, moisturizers, and styling creams are not for the faint of heart or those, like me, with weak arms.
More often than not, the products we purchase turn out to be dust collectors in our cabinets and extra reasons for our wallets to cry. (Moment of silence for our wallets as a sign of respect and recognition for all the horrible things we do to them!)
The one thing that we DON’T have to experiment too much on are the oils that we should be using on our beautiful locks. Of course, some oils won’t provide the best results for some hair as it may for others; but the use of these natural sealants and stimulants is crucial for hair growth and maintenance of our scalp and ends.
Here are some of my favorite, and some of the best, oils that I use religiously—especially after I Big Chopped in March. My hair has grown tremendously, and as much as I would like to thank my moisturizers for the growth, all of my gratitude is aimed at these next few products listed below.
Coconut Oil:
I’m sure Coconut Oil is THE most known product in the land of all things Hair. I pray I don't have to delve too much into detail, but what you should know if you don't already, is how important this oil is for hair growth and scalp health. Coconut oil helps remove product buildup and aids in detangling with added shine.
Be Careful: Coconut oil has been known to be the cause behind a dry scalp / flakes if applied directly. I recommend using this oil for shine or for your ends if you're SURE this oil works with your hair type.
Castor Oil:
Castor Oil is another major ‘must-have’ when it comes to hair growth and scalp health. Not only does this oil reduce frizz, but it also fights dandruff and repairs split ends. It is another known product that I personally heard of, but never actually purchased until recently. One regret I have is that I didn’t buy this oil sooner!
Jojoba Oil:
Jojoba Oil is one of the BEST sealants for the hair shaft! If you need something to aid in locking in the moisture of your moisturizers or creams, get this oil and apply to your ends for further protection and strength. This oil also fights bacteria (really great for scalp health) and helps to condition your hair after wash-day. ( Check out this Amazon Bundle Deal from NOW Foods with Almond, Jojoba and Avocado oil!)
Extra Virgin Olive Oil:
Boy, oh boy did I wrong myself by not using more of the extra virgin olive oil in my pantry. Shine and Softness. The two S’s that describe this natural oil that you should already keep in your kitchen! This is an oil that I would use in moderation, but even in moderation, you get major results with the strength of your hair and the replenishing of split ends.
Almond Oil:
I haven't been one to use too much almond oil, but after reading all of the benefits I was wrong for not purchasing this sooner. (Learn from my mistakes PLEASE!) This is another major sealant, along with Jojoba oil, and is known to treat hair loss. I’ve noticed the shine that this oil gives, and how smooth my hair feels after applying this around the middle and end sections of hair.
Argan Oil:
Hot Argan oil treatments are very popular when it comes to hair smoothing techniques and hydrating hair masks. Of course, this oil helps make your hair smooth and soft to the touch, but it also is very good at penetrating the hair cuticle—making it easier to absorb products that you may use along with this oil.
Avocado Oil:
Just as Avocados are good for your body and skin, they are also incredible for your hair as either a mask or in oil form. Mashing avocados and using it with coconut oil and honey as a hair mask is moisture heaven for your curls, and it helps to replenish your dry and damaged ends. This oil is extremely lightweight and good for second-day hair to add extra shine and frizz control!
Tea Tree Oil:
Tea Tree Oil isn’t exactly an oil you can smother all over your ends, but the health benefits are mighty in comparison to the few options you have to use this oil for. Scalp dryness and dandruff will be completely healed after using some of this or some apple cider vinegar. Tea tree oil also combats psoriasis, lice, and other scalp issues that one could possibly encounter!
These were just a few of the best oils to use for your hair and my favorites that I refuse to live without. I hope you were inspired to stock up for your own healthy or natural hair journey, and I wish nothing but the BEST of hair days and lack of split ends. AMEN.
